God Colored Outside the Box to Create You

“Let God create in you His masterpiece. He will make you truly different and joyfully weird.”     – Craig Groeschel, Weird: Because Normal Isn’t Working

When our daughter was in kindergarten, she had a flair for drawing outside the lines. Her very wise art teacher, Mrs. Peggy Guilbert, encouraged her in this respect and pushed her to fulfill the vision in her head.

I worked in public relations at the same private school our children attended, so I heard the behind-the-scenes talk, especially if it involved my active and creative children.

One day, another teacher told me my daughter had refused to draw the birdcage all the other children were being asked to draw. Usually a compliant child, this surprised me.

Careful not to interrupt art class, I peeked in the classroom doorway to see my daughter in the corner, hunched over something on the floor. All the other students were busy drawing at the tables. Her teacher spotted me and smiled, making her way across the room while the children worked quietly on their projects.

“Is there a problem?” I whispered.

“Not at all,” Mrs. Guilbert said. “Come see.”

I followed her across the room until I finally saw around my daughter to her almost completed project. While all the others were drawing and coloring a birdcage on their papers, mine was building hers. It was an amazing 3-dimensional construction paper birdcage with a colorful paper bird sitting on a tiny swing inside.

“She saw this project completely differently than the other children, so I encouraged her to make it,” Mrs. Guilbert said.

Unique. Outside the box.

My daughter had a unique vision for her project, and God has a unique vision for each of us.

God is so enormously creative and multi-faceted He can give each of us a unique piece of Himself, and still have galaxies of uniqueness left for others yet to be born!

He isn’t seeking to pour his children into a mold of the ideal Christian and voila, you look and act like every other Christian. If fingerprints are unique to every person who has ever lived, what about our genetic code? It’s mind-boggling to consider, but we are “knitted” by God in our mother’s womb, in the exact pattern He directed.

Did He want to clone us all to be the same? Never! He designed you and me to be unique – one of a kind.

He colored outside the box to create you.

Absolutely.

The Bible says God created us in His own image. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 While we are created in the likeness of God, we are not God. However, He has placed in us aspects of His nature and character, including a desire to spend eternity with Him. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God has “set eternity in the human heart.”

We each have been given certain talents and gifts, but we may spend a lifetime uncovering and developing them. God wants to use your gifts for His kingdom, but often it’s a process that takes time, commitment, and a wholehearted desire to please Him.

"For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." Ephesians 2:10

You see, our gifts and talents are not really ours. They have been bestowed by our Creator, and though we are free to exercise our talents, the true blessing comes when we submit those gifts back to Him, to use as He directs.

Think of it like this: Maybe you can sing. The raw talent is there and evident. Your talent flows when your voice is activated by the choice of your will. You have complete control over when and where you choose to sing. Your talent can be cultivated through voice lessons and enhanced by musical training to read notes and music scores.

How do you choose to use your talent? Do you choose to please God with it and follow His direction on the use of your gift? Or are you simply doing whatever you, or others, think is best?

Submitting your gift back to God, to be used as He directs, brings great blessing.

This doesn’t mean your gifts can only be used in a Christian setting! God wants to send us, in all our uniqueness and with our creative talents, to affect and change the culture in which we live, within the Church and in the world.

1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (NIV)

Sometimes our gifts and talents are not obvious. Circumstances ordered by God will often bring them to light at the right time in our lives -- at any age.

Celebrate the uniqueness of YOU, and choose to embrace it.

You are a masterpiece of God’s creativity!
